Job Description / Responsibilities:
1. PURPOSE
Community Health Worker is responsible for assisting in providing optimum nursing care, counseling patients and attending to sick patients and maternal and child health clinics, both at the clinic and outreach activities.

Others: The Community Health Worker performs her or his roles on a multi facet functions which includes take charge in management of patients and clinic in the absence of Duty Nursing Officer in attending to patients and supervising support staff, he or she may also implement Nursing Care as ordered by the nursing officers/clinical HEOs.
3. PRINCIPLE ACCOUNTABILITIES
Community Health Worker is directly accountable to the Senior Nursing Officers and Nursing Officer on duty on each shift.
4. MAJOR DUTIES
- Assist with assessment of individual clients or patients’ conditions and plan nursing care accordingly.
- Assist with implementation of the nursing care, evaluate accordingly and carefully observation.
- Assessment of Trauma patients and safely perform.
- Take charge of administering oral medication and injections as ordered.
- Assist in basic and advanced life support in resuscitation as ordered.
- Assist in basic advanced life support
- Take charge patient observation and ensure accurate taking, reading, documenting and reporting of vital signs for emergency patients by other assign staff.
- Ensure that Beds are carbolized and made for new clients, care of soiled and contaminated linens.
- Assist with checking of emergency trolley and Dangerous Drugs cupboard
- Ensure drugs and supplies are properly accounted for and secured at all times
- Order duties are directed and consistent with the above
5. NATURE AND SCOPE
- This position ensures effectiveness and efficiency of Nursing Cares and Assessment of Trauma patients and safely perform duties to save life.
- Take charge patients observation and ensure accurate taking, reading, documenting and reporting of vital signs for emergency patients.
- Support Senior Nurse responsible for Family Planning, TB/HIV/STI and maternal Child Health and follow of patients absconding from treatments.

5.1 WORKING RELATIONSHIP
(a) Internal
- Reports directly to the Nurse Manager of Accident and Emergency of any matters relating to nursing care of patients.
(b) External
- Maintain effectively communication with clients or patients.
5.2 WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Community Health Worker takes charge of patients within the vicinity of Bomana Center of Excellence and she/he is a front-line public health worker who has the understanding of the nature and scope of Police Training Schedules and activities. He/she then facilitates health care, health information, provide treatments to the police recruits, cadets and staff. Besides that, there are also civilians from the neighboring areas do seek medical treatments there.
- Emergency cases beyond our capacities are usually referred to Gerehu General Hospital (St. John’s Hospital) or Port Moresby General Hospital for further treatments.
6. CONSTRAINTS FRAMEWORK AND BOUNDARIES
This position is guided by the Governments Rules and Procedures in all its activities
6.1 Rules/procedures
- The Police Act; the Constabulary Standing Orders; the Public Service (Management) Act; the Public Finance (Management) Act; and PNG Government General Orders (2012), Public Service Code of Conduct and Ethics. Labour and Employment Act,RPNGC Corporate Plan, Medical Board and Standards.
6.2 Decisions
- The job holder has no authority to make decisions without consulting the the sister incharge.
6.3 Recommendations
- The job holder is to provide recommendations to the sister incharge for nursing and operational matters
7. CHALLENGES
- The existing challenges we face from day to day are the influx of civilians and outsider accessing our clinic. Having limited supply of medical drugs and due to the smaller size of the clinic thus imposes upon extra burden if care. Although priority concern is given to police recruits, cadets and staff however, it appeared to be stressful when the civilian patients do wait for lengthy hours not attended to and the leave when there is a lot to be done especially to our police recruits, cadets and staff.
- The challenges here is to raise the level of the clinic by improving the size and the quality of facilities to cater for higher demands of patients with a fast turnaround time service delivery.
- Bomana clinic is small in size with limited capacity to cater for the needs of the increasing population and influx of patients appearing at the clinic on the regular daily basis.
- Limited medical drug supply is also encountered as a constraint to an effective service delivery. This situation is not new.
8. QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCES AND SKILLS
(a) Qualifications
- Nurse Aid Certificate with Nursing Council of PNG
- Community Health Worker Certificate with Medical Board of PNG
(b) Knowledge
- Possess vast knowledge of patient care and undertake maternal and child health services including diagnosis and treatment of common illness including accident and emergencies.
(c) Skills
- Possess vast and skills in diagnosis and treatment of patients and undertake maternal child health clinics.
(d) Work Experience
- More than four (4) years’ work experience in clinic or community health post
- Confident in attending to any Emergency Cases.
